Why Are So Many Young Adults Still Living with Their Parents?

A new Realtor.com report found that 25.2 million adults under the age of 35 are living with their parents in 2025—the highest number ever recorded.

Today, about 1 in every 3 young adults lives at home.

The biggest reason? Housing has become too expensive.

Home prices have climbed dramatically over the past few years, with the median home now listed around $430,000, while rents have also reached record highs. At the same time, the U.S. is estimated to be short by nearly 4 million homes, making affordable housing even harder to find.

What's surprising is that many of these young adults are working full-time and have college degrees. They're not living at home because they don't have jobs—they simply can't afford to buy or rent a place of their own.

This trend is also changing the housing market. More people are delaying moving out, getting married, and buying their first home. In fact, the typical first-time homebuyer is now around 40 years old, much older than in previous generations.

For buyers, this highlights how challenging today's market can be. But it also shows why increasing the supply of affordable homes is so important for the future.

If you're wondering whether buying a home is possible in today's market, there may be more options than you think. The right strategy, financing, and guidance can make a big difference.
