How Important is Integrity in Business?
Integrity: The One Thing You Can Never Fake
If I asked you to name the most valuable thing you own, what would you say?
Your home?
Your business?
Your family?
Your reputation?
For me, the answer is simple: integrity.
Integrity isn't something you can buy, inherit, or borrow. It isn't a title you've earned or an award sitting on a shelf. It's something you choose every single day.
Most people define integrity as honesty or having strong moral principles. That's certainly true, but I believe it goes a little deeper than that.
Integrity is doing the right thing when nobody is watching.
It's keeping your word when it would be easier not to.
It's choosing character over convenience.
It's living the same life behind closed doors that you live in front of everyone else.
To me, integrity is about being whole. There isn't a "business version" of you and a "personal version" of you. The values you claim to believe in should show up everywhere—in your relationships, your work, your conversations, and the promises you make.
I've learned that people don't just listen to what we say. They watch what we do.
Clients don't hire us simply because we're knowledgeable. They hire us because they trust us.
Friends stay in our lives because they trust us.
Family leans on us because they trust us.
And trust is built through integrity.
One of the hardest parts about integrity is that it often requires doing something that nobody will ever know you did.
Returning a phone call you don't feel like making.
Owning a mistake before someone discovers it.
Giving credit when no one would notice if you didn't.
Having an uncomfortable conversation instead of avoiding it.
Keeping a promise long after the excitement of making it has faded.
Those moments don't make headlines, but they quietly shape who we become.
I also believe integrity begins with being honest with ourselves.
It's easy to convince ourselves we're doing our best. It's harder to honestly ask:
-
Am I keeping my commitments?
-
Am I treating people fairly?
-
Am I doing work I'm proud to attach my name to?
-
Am I becoming the person I say I want to be?
Those questions aren't always comfortable, but they're necessary.
I've found that people with the highest integrity also have one thing in common—they pursue excellence. Not perfection, because none of us are perfect, but excellence. They understand that every conversation, every email, every transaction, and every interaction is a reflection of who they are.
Especially in real estate, our reputation walks into the room long before we do.
People can sense authenticity.
They can also sense when someone is simply saying what they think others want to hear.
Integrity has a way of speaking louder than words ever could.
I also believe that what we consistently put into the world eventually comes back to us. When we lead with honesty, kindness, consistency, and genuine service, we naturally attract people who value those same qualities. Strong relationships are rarely built on clever marketing—they're built on trust.
At the end of the day, integrity isn't about being perfect.
It's about striving to be the same person every day.
Keeping your promises.
Owning your mistakes.
Doing quality work because it's the right thing to do—not because someone is watching.
And understanding that your character is built one decision at a time.
Become more aware of your choices.
Pay attention to the promises you make.
Choose honesty over convenience.
Because once you begin living with greater integrity, you'll notice something remarkable...
Everything else begins to change.
With gratitude always,
